BASF Grower App
Harmonization Project

One platform. Two markets. Every grower.

A unified mobile app for BASF Agricultural Solutions APAC — proposed by Monstar Lab.

Client BASF Agricultural Solutions APAC
Prepared by Monstar Lab Pte Ltd · Singapore
Region India · Japan
Year 2026
Chapter 01

Your brief.
Our starting point.

Chapter 01 · The brief · 1 of 2 · Who and why

Who you're building this for. And why now.

User group
Growers / Farmers
India and Japan initially.
Problem statement
BASF currently has different versions of farmer apps across countries with significant overlaps in functionalities — "AgGenie" in India (farmer loyalty + farm tools) and "Minorasu App" in Japan (farmer loyalty + farm tools). Due to country-specific requirements, the apps were developed independently — causing duplicate effort and inconsistent farmer experiences.
Chapter 01 · The brief · 2 of 2 · What we'll build, why it pays off

The Grower App Harmonization Project.

Brief description of proposed solution
Unify BASF's farmer-facing mobile applications across Asia Pacific — primarily India's AgGenie and Japan's Minorasu — into one regional platform that delivers a consistent, efficient, and scalable digital experience for growers.
Value hypothesis
Personalized recommendations and relevant market data — including weather forecasts. Brand loyalty incentivized through farmer loyalty programs.
Assumption
Upgrading the tech stack and streamlining features for regional requirements will deliver cost reduction and process efficiencies.
Chapter 01 · The current state

Two apps. Two backends. Two roadmaps.

Same farmer, different experience. Same BASF, twice the operational cost. The platform you'd build today wouldn't be these two apps.

India · 170K downloads AgGenie

Farm tools + Exponus loyalty

  • · AI crop consultant + satellite imagery
  • · Hourly + 7-day weather, mandi prices
  • · QR-scan cashback to UPI / bank
  • · Drone spray booking
  • · English + 8 regional Indian languages
Japan · 18 SKUs Minorasu

Farm tools + Minorasu Points loyalty

  • · Receipt OCR → points → prize sweepstakes
  • · 7,000 + global weather data points
  • · Pesticide dilution / spray volume calculator
  • · Per-field 10-day forecasts
  • · Japanese only

Shared learnings
Chapter 01 · The thesis

80% shared. 20% configurable.
One operating model.

Most of what AgGenie and Minorasu do, they do alike. The 20% that differs — loyalty mechanics, regulatory text, drone availability — is exactly what feature flags and adapter patterns exist for.

Chapter 02 · How it scales

Five decisions that make this work in 10 markets, not just two.

01 · Loyalty

Adapter pattern

The platform isn't a loyalty engine — it talks to one. Exponus for India, Minorasu Points for Japan, plug a third-party for any new market.
02 · Country fit

Feature flags by market

Drone booking on in India, off in Japan. OCR receipts on in Japan, secondary in India. Same code, different posture.
03 · Rural reality

Offline-first, delta sync

Catalog and POP available without signal. Scans queue and replay. Bandwidth-aware. Built for the field, not the office.
04 · Localization

i18n from day one

9 Indian languages and Japanese on launch. RTL ready. CMS-managed content per locale. New markets ship as configuration, not engineering.
05 · Surfaces

Modular by feature area

Each feature group is its own module. The farmer app, the admin console, and any future portal all consume the same APIs.
The point

This is how you ship Indonesia next.

Without a second codebase. Without a second roadmap. Without re-explaining what the product is.
Chapter 03

The app, screen by screen.

Chapter 03 · F01 — F04 · Onboarding & profile

Designed for low-literacy farmers from screen one.

Phone-number login with auto-detected OTP. Granular consent text per market — DPDP for India, APPI for Japan. A profile that asks for the four things that matter and nothing more: language, location, farm size, primary crops.

Welcome
01 · Welcome — brand-led, under 5 seconds
Language
02 · Language — 9 Indian + Japanese
OTP
03 · OTP — auto-detected on Android
Chapter 03 · The home screen, personalized

One home, personalized to every farmer.

Loyalty balance, weather pinned to the field, mandi prices, today's advisory — all driven by feature flags and the country profile, not hard-coded. Same code, three farmers, three home screens.

Behind the scenes: F10 weather · F11 prices · F12 scan · F13–17 loyalty — composed per market.

Rajesh · Maharashtra · हिन्दी
Japan home, Japanese
Hiroshi · Ibaraki · 日本語
Chapter 03 · F05 — F08 · Product & tools

The catalog knows your country, your crop, your pest.

Browse only what's registered in your market. Open a product, see similar alternatives without leaving the page. Tap the calculator and get the exact ml of product and L of water for your field size — three taps, one decision.

Browse → compare → dose. One flow, three screens.

Catalog
F05 · Catalog — country-gated, CPM-driven
Product detail
F06 · Detail — compare alternatives inline
Dose calculator
F07 · Calculator — drag to exact dose
Chapter 03 · F10 + F23 · Weather + advisory

Hyperlocal weather, tied to the field pin.

Weather alone is data. Weather plus a threshold-driven push — "80% rain Wednesday on grape vines, apply Zampro cover spray today before noon" — is action. F10 and F23 are designed to work as one motion: forecast → alert → product.

  • Pinned to the saved field, not the phone GPS
  • 10-day outlook with rain probability per day
  • Pest / disease alerts tied to geography + season
  • Threshold-based push surfaces only what changes the decision
Weather forecast
F10 · Forecast — field-pinned, 10-day
Advisory notifications
F23 · Advisory — threshold-triggered push
Chapter 03 · F13 — F17 · Loyalty & gamification

Loyalty isn't a feature. It's the spine.

Tier ring, balance, transaction history, rewards, streaks, referrals — all surfaced through one adapter. India runs Exponus + UPI cashback. Japan runs Minorasu Points + prize sweepstakes. The farmer experience is consistent. The plumbing isn't.

  • F13 · Adapter pattern — pluggable backend per market
  • F15 · Streaks, badges, challenges — configured, not coded
  • F16 · Referrals — both parties earn on successful registration
  • F17 · Tier rules sourced from the loyalty backend itself
India loyalty
India · Exponus + UPI
Japan loyalty
Japan · Minorasu + sweepstakes
Chapter 03 · F12 + F14

Scan.
Earn.
Done.

QR on packaging, or OCR on a retailer receipt. Either path lands in the same earn drawer in under 5 seconds — loyalty credited, transaction logged, all in one motion.

QR scan
01 · QR — scan packaging
OCR scan
02 · OCR — read retailer receipt
Earn confirmation
03 · Earn — credited inside 24h
Chapter 03 · F28 · Drone booking, end-to-end

Drone booking, end-to-end, in the app.

Real satellite map of Niphad. Field pins from the farmer's profile. Date picker honoring weather windows. A booking ID and a live status timeline. Activates only in markets where drone application is legal and BASF has partnered providers — on in India, dormant in Japan, by feature flag.

Field → date → operator assigned. One flow, three taps.

Pick field on satellite map
01 · Field — real Niphad satellite
Pick date and time
02 · Date — weather-aware slots
Booking confirmed and live status
03 · Status — booked → on-site → verified
Chapter 03 · F08 + F09 + F11 · Decision support

Three more decisions, made on the phone.

Mandi prices change daily. Best practices change by season. ROI changes per crop, per acre, per market. Three small surfaces, each pulling its own weight in the brief — and each one already a screen the farmer can use today.

Prices · best-practices library · investment planner.

Mandi prices
F11 · Prices — mandi-region matched, with alerts
Best practices library
F09 · Learn — POP, stewardship, agronomy
ROI planner
F08 · ROI — investment planner per crop
Chapter 03 · F18 + F19 + F24 + F30 · Engagement

Stay in the loop. Stay in touch.

Push, in-app inbox, contact forms, event calendar — the four lines from the brief that keep BASF in the farmer's day. Threshold-driven, language-aware, and re-promptable for consent at any time.

Notifications · forms · events.

In-app notifications
F18 + F19 · Inbox + push — threshold-driven
Contact us
F24 · Contact — built-in forms, audited
Event calendar
F30 · Events — field days & trainings
Chapter 03 · The wow moment

Same app.
One click.
🇮🇳 ↔ 🇯🇵

The persona switcher flips market, language, currency, units, loyalty backend, and feature flags across the whole stack. Same codebase. No redeploy. The harmonization story, made tangible.

🇯🇵 Japan · Hiroshi, Ibaraki
Chapter 03 · F20 + F21 · Operational maturity

Built for the field. And for your IT team.

F20 · Offline mode

The catalog still works without signal.

POP, stewardship videos, and the product catalog stay live. Scans and redemptions queue with a sync badge. When the phone reconnects, queued actions replay automatically — no farmer ever loses a credit.
F21 · Force update

One regulatory release, every market caught up.

Soft prompt or hard block, configurable per market with localized copy. India users see DPDP Act flavour. Japanese users see APPI flavour. Same trigger, different message.

Chapter 04

Beyond the phone.

Chapter 04 · F25 · Admin console · 1 of 5

The dashboard that opens every Monday.

A single screen that tells the regional team what mattered this week: active farmers, scans processed, loyalty credits issued, churn signals — split by market so India and Japan never have to share a spreadsheet.

  • Top-line KPIs by market with WoW deltas
  • Live feed of scans, redemptions and OCR matches
  • Health strip — push delivery, sync queue, error rate
  • Exportable to CSV / boardroom deck in two clicks
Admin dashboard
Chapter 04 · F25 · Admin console · 2 of 5

Ship content without shipping the app.

POP tips, articles, videos, events, stewardship — every piece of content the farmer app surfaces, edited by BASF marketing and agronomy without engineering. Scope by market and language, publish, done.

  • Six content types in one editor
  • Market + language scoping per row
  • Drafts, scheduling, expiry — without a release
  • Audit trail per change · DPDP / APPI compliant
Content CMS
Chapter 04 · F25 · Admin console · 3 of 5

One farmer, one screen, the whole story.

Search by phone, name, or scan ID. Pull up a farmer's full timeline — every login, every scan, every credit, every advisory delivered. Support gets a working answer in minutes, not days.

  • Universal search · phone, name, scan, transaction
  • Activity timeline — logins, scans, redemptions, advisories
  • Consent state visible · DPDP / APPI re-prompt actions
  • Role-based PII masking — support sees less than ops
User database
Chapter 04 · F25 · Admin console · 4 of 5

Loyalty ops, on a Tuesday afternoon.

Adjust a balance, override a tier, void a fraudulent scan — every action role-gated and written to the audit log. The same surface manages Exponus in India and Minorasu Points in Japan, because the adapter abstracts the engine.

  • Manual credit / debit with reason codes
  • Tier overrides, expiry adjustments, reward swaps
  • Engine-agnostic — same UI against any loyalty backend
  • Audit log on every action, exportable for compliance
Loyalty operations
Chapter 04 · F25 · Admin console · 5 of 5

Compose once. Reach four channels.

Marketing writes a single message and the platform delivers it to push, in-app inbox, WhatsApp and email — segmented by crop, region, language, tier. Localized previews per market sit side-by-side so nothing ships untranslated.

  • Audience builder — crop, region, tier, language, last-active
  • Side-by-side localized previews · IN, JP, future markets
  • Schedule, throttle, and A/B without engineering
  • Delivery + open-rate analytics per channel
Push composer
Chapter 04 · The architecture, made visible

The 80/20 story, in one screen.

Toggle a feature on the right, watch the live farmer app reflect it instantly. Drone booking off → it disappears from the home screen. Sweepstakes on → loyalty mechanics shift. This is the surface that lets BASF roll out Indonesia without engineering involvement.

  • Per-market feature flag matrix · enable/disable any of the 32 features
  • Loyalty adapter swap · Exponus, Minorasu, third-party
  • Locale defaults · language, currency, units, regulatory law
  • Live preview of farmer app updating as you toggle
Country configurator
Chapter 05

Beyond MVP.
Our suggestions.

None of these are in the brief. They're our opinion on where this platform earns the next chapter.

Chapter 05 · Surface · 01 of 05 · Beyond MVP

The agronomist in the field, in the loop.

A companion app for BASF agronomists and field reps — visit logs, advisories pushed straight to a farmer's app, satellite-pinned tickets, AI-assisted photo diagnosis, all offline-first. Closes the human loop the AI consultant alone cannot.

Why it matters
Most farmer apps ignore the field rep. BASF already has them. Plug them into the same data spine and the whole platform gets sharper — better data into CRM, faster ticket resolution, more relevant advisory at scale.
Field officer app
Chapter 05 · Surface · 02 of 05 · Beyond MVP

The shop counter, online.

Krishi Kendras, distributors and JA outlets log into a lightweight web tool to verify QR scans, see their farmers' loyalty redemptions, and watch their channel revenue. BASF gets channel-level insight neither AgGenie nor Minorasu have ever delivered.

Why it matters
Loyalty without retailer visibility is half a loop. Closing it gives BASF data on which products move where, lets retailers participate in the program, and creates a partner stickiness that competitors can't match.
Retailer portal
Chapter 05 · Surface · 03 of 05 · Beyond MVP

Where drone bookings actually land.

Drone service partners receive bookings made from the farmer app, dispatch their fleet, run pre-flight checklists, and mark jobs complete with GPS-verified proof-of-spray. The booking on the farmer side becomes a real operation, traceable end-to-end.

Why it matters
Drone booking is listed in the brief as "full integration". Without a partner-side surface it isn't real. This portal is the missing half of that promise — and it's what makes BASF's drone program demoably end-to-end.
Drone partner portal
Chapter 05 · Surface · 04 of 05 · Beyond MVP

From one-off pushes to journeys.

Sits above the admin push composer. Marketing teams build multi-step journeys, A/B test loyalty offers, and orchestrate push + WhatsApp + in-app together — with funnel-level attribution all the way back to redemption.

Why it matters
The MVP admin console handles BAU operations. This is the strategic layer — the place BASF's APAC marketing team actually lives. It's the difference between an app and a platform.
Marketing campaign builder
Chapter 05 · Surface · 05 of 05 · Beyond MVP

The slide that sells the program.

Cross-market harmonization ROI, redemption attribution, retention by tier, drone bookings, NPS — all in one cross-region dashboard designed for the BASF APAC leadership review, not the daily admin.

Why it matters
When budget conversations happen 12 months in, this dashboard is the artefact that justifies the next phase. Build it day-one, populate it as the platform runs.

Chapter 05 · Eight features that earn a roadmap slot

Eight features inside the farmer app.

Feature · 01

AI Crop Doctor

Photograph a leaf, get the diagnosis and the BASF product that fits. Builds on AgGenie's AI consultant.

Feature · 02

Voice-first navigation

Speak in any of the 9 Indian languages. Critical for low-literacy users — addresses the F01 concern head-on.

Feature · 03

Field map · satellite

Per-field NDVI overlays. AgGenie continuity for India users — protects the migration story.

Feature · 04

Two-way WhatsApp agent

Extends F26 from broadcast to conversational Q&A on weather, prices, loyalty.

Feature · 05

Carbon & sustainability tracker

BASF input usage feeding into stewardship and ESG narrative — already a board-level conversation.

Feature · 06

Smart reorder & e-commerce

Calculator output → order from the local distributor in two taps. Adds a direct margin line.

Feature · 07

Insurance & input finance

Bolts onto the ROI tool. High-margin partnership opportunity with banks and insurers.

Feature · 08

Migration simulator

Visualizes the AgGenie → unified cutover. Speaks directly to PRD §4 and de-risks the transition.

Chapter 07

Case studies.

One pillar story — the world's largest tyre maker, under NDA — and eleven companions. Picked because they tell the BASF story. APAC and global. Industrial scale. Loyalty, mobility, and consumer apps that ship.

Pillar case · Client (NDA) · The world's largest tyre maker · 2026

From traceable rubber to a verifiable supply chain.

An AI-native platform for the world's largest tyre maker, built for the EUDR era. Five user-facing apps, one living supply graph, every kilogram signed end to end.

The closest analogue to BASF's harmonization brief — multi-market, multi-persona, low-literacy UX, regulator-grade evidence. At scale, in flight.

Pillar · The client & the pressure

The world's biggest tyre maker has a rubber problem.

If you can't see where your rubber comes from, you can't sell tyres into Europe. Not in 2026. EUDR enforcement is biting now — every shipment needs plot-level GPS plus a signed Due Diligence Statement.

Market share
16.6%
Global tyre market — the largest single buyer of natural rubber.
Countries
150+
Sales footprint with 160+ production bases.
CO₂ goal
−50%
By 2050 — public, audited carbon commitment.
Today's traceability
~30%
Best-in-class but still 70% short of the 2026 target.
Pillar · The problem

Three problems hiding inside one supply chain.

01
Tier 6 → tier 1

Tracing is broken.

Six tiers of traders, paper receipts, mixed loads. Once latex leaves the farm, the link to a specific plot, day, and tapper evaporates inside the trader layer.

02
6 million smallholders

Farmers have no good-practice training.

Six million smallholders — mostly without an agronomist's number. Yields drop, disease spreads, plots get abandoned.

03
3K factories

ESG and labour abuse hide inside the trader layer.

Migrant workers, child labour, forced overtime — invisible to a Tokyo procurement officer. Annual audits surface a fraction of what's there.

Pillar · The 2026 reimagining

Six bets that turn this from a CRUD app into a flagship.

01 · Voice-first

Voice-first farmer UX

Tappers speak in Bahasa, Thai, Vietnamese, regional dialects. The model fills the structured log. No keyboard, no literacy barrier.

02 · Photo-first

Photo → everything

Snap a tree → species, disease, panel quality, yield estimate. One photo replaces a 20-question form.

03 · Passive

Passive deforestation watch

Plot polygons monitored against Sentinel-2 + Global Forest Watch. Alerts fire without farmer effort.

04 · One-click

EUDR DDS in one click

Generate a Due Diligence Statement with geolocation, risk assessment, and signed evidence — per shipment.

05 · Agentic

Agentic risk engine

SAQs auto-prefilled from 90 days of transactions, news, satellite. Humans validate, not type.

06 · Honest

Honest sustainability premium

Per-kg premium paid to the farmer's e-wallet when their batch verifies — clear cause and effect, no leaderboard theatre.

Pillar · The solution

Five apps, one supply graph.

Each surface writes to the same chain. A tap logged by a farmer in Sumatra moves a counter on a sustainability lead's dashboard in Tokyo within seconds.

"45 trees, 12 kg."

Hold and speak in Bahasa, Thai, Vietnamese. The model fills the structured log. GPS pinned, plot pre-selected.

Farmer sell QR Sell · signed QR

One scan, the chain extends.

QR carries plot ID, kg, timestamp, buyer. Premium calculated live. Trader scans, the chain extends one node.

Farmer wallet Wallet · direct fiat rails

Premium hits the e-wallet.

DANA, GoPay, OVO, PromptPay, MoMo. Each premium tagged to its verified batch — no invented wallet, no licence headache.

Pillar · Trader app · The chain only verifies if traders play

The middleman, finally on the record.

Trader scan Scan · camera reads farmer QR

Bid, accept, write the trade.

Farmer-signed credential becomes a trader-signed credential. Chain extends one more node.

Trader inventory Inventory · provenance retained

Every kg knows its plot.

Trader can split or combine batches — but never strip the chain. SUNMI POS prints labels in the field.

Trader ship Ship · bundle, sign, dispatch

A Verifiable Credential travels upstream.

Multiple farmer-signed batches bundled into one trader-signed shipment. Not a paper docket — a signed evidence bundle.

Pillar · Auditor app · A second pair of eyes in every site visit

The audit copilot, in her pocket.

Auditor home Home · the day plan

Today's count, YTD, open findings.

Auditor assignments Assignments · pre-scheduled

AI hint per site.

Auditor flow Audit · findings, signed

5-step structured flow.

Auditor history History · auditable trail

Every audit, searchable.

Onboarding app for a mobile workforce.

CBRE's mobile workforce needed a unified ramp-up for new joiners. We shipped an app with onboarding checklists, organisational info, and stakeholder contacts — now scaling globally to APAC, EMEA, and the Americas.

  • Onboarding checklist tied to role and region
  • Org structure + stakeholder directory at first tap
  • Phase 2 rolling out across all regions
Why this matters for BASF
Built once, rolled to APAC, EMEA and the Americas. Mirrors how BASF will scale beyond India and Japan to the rest of APAC.

Designing a powerful survey tool.

SurveyMonkey wanted insights from mobile-centric consumers. We designed and built SurveyMonkey Rewards — a one-button app that pays consumers to take quick surveys, integrated with their engineering team.

  • One-button micro-rewards mechanic
  • Multi-disciplinary integration with SurveyMonkey engineering
  • iOS + Android live four months after kickoff
Why this matters for BASF
Embedded delivery alongside the client's own engineering team — the same model we'd run with BASF's APAC squad, on the same cadence.

Tokyo's largest cab fleet, in one tap.

S.RIDE is a joint venture between Tokyo's cab operators and the Sony Group — 10,000+ vehicles, the largest fleet in the city. We built the dispatch app. Simple, smart, speedy. One swipe and the nearest cab is yours.

  • 10,000+ vehicles across the Tokyo network
  • Single-swipe dispatch UX
  • Sony Group joint venture · launched 2019
Why this matters for BASF

Three mobility services. One experience.

Sixt offers car-sharing, car-rental, and ride-hailing. We helped them define a single core app experience that surfaces all three as one premium mobility service — elevated brand, frictionless flow.

  • Single app concept across three mobility services
  • Premium mobility brand positioning
  • Elevated digital customer experience
Why this matters for BASF
Three services, one app, one brand. The same composability story as one farmer app spanning India, Japan, and the next APAC market.

Bluetooth-connected app for a smoke-free future.

BAT found that user satisfaction in the first two weeks of an e-cigarette purchase was the key retention lever. We built a Bluetooth-connected companion app for glo and Vype that engages customers and surfaces device usage.

  • Bluetooth pairing with glo + Vype devices
  • Device-usage stats + community leaderboards
  • Reduced friction for first-time adoption
Why this matters for BASF
An engagement app tied to a hardware purchase — pattern reusable for any QR-tagged BASF product, with the same first-two-weeks retention lever.

Chapter 08

Why us. What's next.

Why Monstar Lab for BASF Grower Platform

Three reasons we're the right partner for this brief.

01

Singapore + Japan, on the ground.

Your two launch markets are our two strongest APAC offices. Same time zone. Same language. Local teams that know your regulators, your partners, and your channels.
02

Platform-scale delivery.

Sembcorp, Mitsui, NTUC Income — multi-country, multi-surface platforms with adapter patterns and feature flags as the spine. We don't ship apps in isolation; we ship operating models.
03

The right tonal experience.

Kubota for heavy machinery in agriculture. Honda Power for factory traceability. Sembcorp for industrial ops. Tonal experience BASF can't get from a generic consumer agency.
Resources · Already on the table

Two documents are ready when you are.

While we built the demo, we also wrote the spec. A full PRD and a complete user-story sheet are linked below — pulled directly from the project brief, not invented. Open them, redline them, send them back. Once aligned, we'll layer detailed budget estimation on top.

Next
Once these two are confirmed, we'll come back with a detailed estimation — squad shape, sprint plan, cost by market, milestones tied to the 32 features.
Closing · Thank you · Ready for the RFP

Let's build it

Everything you saw is mocked. Every screen is something Monstar Lab can ship. We'd love to do the RFP next.
